Jean-Paul Vroom

Jean (Johannes-) Paul Vroom  (The Hague 1922 – Amsterdam 2006), whose father was set designer and painter and whose mother ran a fashion house, studied at the Royal Academy in The Hague. At a young age he moved to Paris where he studied printmaking. During his life he would create numerous engravings, litho’s and screen prints, giving many solo exhibitions of his oil paintings in Paris, Amsterdam, Germany and in the U.S.A. His first work for the theatre was in 1952 when he did set and costume design for a production of Waiting for Godot with Roger Blin. His close collaboration with the choreographer Hans van Manen resulted in many set and costume designs for the Nederlands Dans Theater and the National Ballet, and portraits of ballet dancers such as Rachel Beaujean and Rudolf Nurejev.
