Corneille

Corneille (full name Corneille Guillaume van Beverloo, Liege, 1922 – Auvers-sur-Oise, 2010) was born in Belgium to Dutch parents. The family moved back to the Netherlands when he was twelve years old. Corneille was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. With Karel Appel and Constant he formed the Nederlandse Experimentele Groep (1948), instrumental in the formation of the Cobra group that same year, with members from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. The poetic Corneille felt strong affinity with Miro and Klee. After the group dissolved in 1951 he moved to Paris and fostered an interest in African art. From the 60s on, his works began to take on a more figurative style. Corneille’s work has been collected by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and many other museums worldwide.
